On Sunday 9th October 22 members enjoyed a guided tour of the City of Adelaide Clipper at Port Adelaide.

We lucked out, It was a good day, because it wasn’t raining.

The City of Adelaide Clipper was built in 1864 in England and spent its first years sailing back and forth between London and Adelaide bringing immigrants on trips taking 3 months.  A lot of time and money was spent to bring the ship to Australia from its impending grave in Scotland, with the ship arriving in Port Adelaide in 2014 on the back of a heavy lift ship from Holland.

The City of Adelaide and the Cutty Sark are the only two clipper ships still in existence.

The volunteers are slowing returning the interior of the ship to how it was back in the 1800’s and it’s interesting to see how a bunch of people were crammed on the boat for 90 days.  The tours of the boat are a source of income for its long term rebuild.

After the tour we all headed over to the Birkenhead Tavern for lunch on the deck, oblivious to the Great Race being played out on the television.
